U.S. Congress - Senators and Representatives
|
Since legislation effects many aspects of the railroad it is important to be involved. Your working conditions and work rules are often the direct result of legislation. Be more than a passive observer! Contact your Senators and Representatives, their decision on how to vote is influenced by phone calls and correspondence received at their office. If you need information on a bill, a Senator, a Representative or voting records go to Project Vote Smart.

Etiquette
It is important to convey the right message.
- Use their Title:
- Honorable, Senator, Representative, Mr. President, etc. Be
respectful.
- Thank You:
- Be polite and courteous, thank your legislator for their time.
- Be Specific:
- Get to the point. Make the reason for your letter or telephone call clear. Mention specific bill number if available. By being brief and to the point, your letter will be easier to read.
- Topics:
- Each contact should be about a specific topic. If there are two issues you wish to express an opinion about, it is better to send another letter (e-mail) or make a second phone call with second issue.
- Don't
- remind them they work for you (they know that ... or should).
- use profanity or derogatory remarks.
- mention voting for someone else, in the past or the future.
